BFA is a forum that brings together leaders in government, business and academia in Asia to share visions on the most pressing issues in this region and the world at large. The forum encourages regional economic integration among Asian countries and brings them closer to their development goals. It is held in the scenic island of Boao at the southernmost part of China in the province of Hainan, the permanent site of the Annual Conference of the Forum since 2002.

The discussions for this year’s forum centred around macro-economy, regional development, industry transformation, technological innovation, politics and security. It also has sessions on new growth drivers amid the weak global economic recovery, China's campaign against corruption and HIV, SARS, Ebola, smog and their impact on human health.

China’s President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote address at the opening ceremony on 28 March and called on the international community to build a community of common destiny and welcomed participation in the China-proposed "Belt and Road" initiatives, namely, the initiatives on building the Silk Road Economic Zone and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

Sukanto Tanoto was also one of the three overseas Chinese entrepreneurs invited to attend a discussion session held by China's President Xi with global leading entrepreneurs at the Boao Forum for Asia. This is a recognition of the Indonesian-born Sukanto Tanoto’s contribution and advocacy for closer ties between people living in China and their counterparts overseas.
