Sukanto Tanoto directs the operations of the RGE Group, the $15 billion global family of natural resources-based companies he founded in Indonesia and expanded into the global stage. This is a family business that has been handed down for two generations, is firmly rooted in family values and that has been the key to its success.
In the final instalment of the BBC Family Business Series by BBC News, Sukanto Tanoto’s youngest son, Anderson Tanoto, talks about the challenges of working in a multi-generational team in the family business.
"The more senior people in our company have a lot of mutual respect for the younger people, as the younger generation has fresh ideas. Likewise, the younger generation in the company also needs to have mutual respect for the people that we are working with. My father always told me to never forget how far we have come, never forget how lucky we are. So we know how to appreciate where we come from." Anderson Tanoto told Rizki Siregar from BBC News.
Anderson Tanoto, who is currently helping to direct the RGE company APRIL’s fiber production interests, is the only son in his family business, but he has not let his fast-track career go to his head.
"You are not different form any one else. The day you feel the sense of entitlement is the day of the beginning of the decline. Because everything you have, you need to work for, and you are not entitled to anything. This is the value that was imparted from my father."
Sukanto Tanoto has strived to pass on the importance of respect, conviction and hard work to his children, who represent the next generation in the running of the family’s business. These values form the solid foundation upon which the business relies on for its success.
