On 12 February 2015, Tanoto Foundation signed an agreement with United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support the implementation of SATAP (Sekolah Satu Atap) - One Roof School program in East Java and West Sulawesi in Indonesia.
The One Roof School program was launched by the government of Indonesia in 2005 as part of its commitment to achieve education for all. One roof schools are where the classrooms of junior secondary are built on the same site as a primary school. This education model was developed to facilitate students’ transition from primary to secondary school, and to make education more affordable and accessible to the under-privileged children. The One Roof School program has shown a positive impact in reducing school drop-out rate of children and helps to channel the children’s activities from working or idleness into studying that will better prepare them for their future.
As part of the agreement, Tanoto Foundation will provides the financial support to UNICEF to enhance the SATAP implementation through advocacy programs directed at policy makers in education, SATAP school management officials and local communities. In addition, UNICEF will also train teachers in implementing Active, Creative, Effective and Fun Learning.
“We hope that after this first initiative we will be able to further expand our collaboration with Tanoto Foundation. Together we can make a real difference for many children in Indonesia,” said Gunilla Olsson, UNICEF Representative in Indonesia.
Through this partnership with UNICEF, Tanoto Foundation is putting into practice the belief of its founders, Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto : that everyone has the same right to have adequate and productive life and education is the key to support that right. “We are excited to announce this partnership. Tanoto Foundation focuses on alleviating poverty through quality education,” said Sihol Aritonang, Chairman of Tanoto Foundation Board of Management.
